Shizunomiya, a commuter town on the outskirts of the metropolis.
The city-facing side is relatively open, with many urban landmarks, while the seaward side is rich with nature.
In the center of that town sits Shizunomiya Academy. The students all spend their time after school in various ways. The sports club members head to the large park nearby to run, and those who don't belong to any clubs head towards town to act their age.
Kazuma Tachibana, who entered Shizunomiya school this spring, possesses the power to read other people’s minds.
It might seem like a useful ability to have, but the truth is it’s actually pretty lackluster. “I don’t know whose thoughts are whose, and when there’s multiple people around, all the thoughts get mixed up.”
He’s had this power for as long as he can remember, but it’s not something he has complete control over. He gets overwhelmed by the constant stream of people’s thoughts, whether he likes it or not.
With a lot of training, he’s managed to control it enough to be able to live an ordinary school life.
Shizunomiya school has adopted a school policy where students must form ‘action groups’, who work together to tackle tvarious tasks throughout the year.
Some students might think that means they get to spend the year having fun with a group of friends, but the members are decided by a merciless lottery system.
And so, the socially awkward Kazuma finds himself in a group of quirky individuals.
The cool and quiet Sakura Yukimoto...
The ditzy and forgetful Moka Momozono...
The cheerful and athletic Natsuki Kazama...
The self-proclaimed spirit medium, Saaya Kurotsuki...
The beautiful member of the drama club, Yuriko Ootori...
The sporty, but less-than-bright Youichi Kitagami...
...and the guy who only cares about getting popular, Shunta Takanaga.
These eight individuals couldn’t have less in common with each other, but they are all forced to work together as an action group.
Then one day, something is stolen from the female changing room.
This marks the first case of Kazuma Tachibana, the future Receptive Detective.
